Null is a value you can see

An empty string means the reader typed nothing. Null means there is no string yet. A form that uses one for both will save the wrong record.

Elvis is a fallback, not a deletion. Use it when a default is honest. Leave the null in place when the screen still has to say that the value never arrived.
